Sometimes a full custom build isn’t the right answer. You have a theme that’s 80% right and you need it taken to 100% — properly. We refine existing WordPress themes into something that feels custom-made, with the performance and structure of a build done from scratch.

When customization is the right call (and when it isn’t)

Theme customization is the right path when you have a well-built starting theme — something from Kadence, Astra, GeneratePress, Blocksy, or a quality premium theme — and you need design changes, layout adjustments, performance work, or new functionality.

It’s the wrong path when the underlying theme is fundamentally bloated (most heavy multi-purpose themes), when you need so many changes that customization costs more than starting fresh, or when the theme uses a page builder that hurts performance beyond repair. We’ll tell you honestly which scenario you’re in. If a clean rebuild is the better investment, we’ll point you to our WordPress development service instead.

What our customization service covers

  • Child theme setup — so your changes survive future theme updates without breaking
  • Design refinements — typography, spacing, colour, layout adjustments to make the theme feel ownable
  • Custom block patterns and templates — for Gutenberg-based themes, so editors get on-brand starting points
  • Performance optimization — removing theme bloat, deferring scripts, optimizing the asset pipeline
  • Custom post type and taxonomy setup — if you need content structures the theme doesn’t support out of the box
  • ACF field group setup — for content sections that need editorial control without touching code
  • WooCommerce template customization — product page, cart, checkout adjustments while staying upgrade-safe
  • SEO improvements — coordinating with our technical SEO work to fix theme-level issues

How we work on customization projects

Customization engagements are usually 2–4 weeks, depending on scope. We start with a short audit — what theme you’re using, what works, what needs to change, what’s realistic given the theme’s architecture.

Then we work in a child theme on a staging environment. You see the changes as they’re built, give feedback, and approve. When everything’s ready, we deploy to production with a rollback plan in case anything unexpected happens — though that’s rare when changes are properly isolated in a child theme.

After launch, you can extend the customizations yourself or hand them to any other WordPress developer. The work is documented and structured — no proprietary lock-in.

What customization usually achieves

  • A site that doesn’t look “off-the-shelf” anymore — even if it started from a popular theme
  • Better Core Web Vitals scores — our customization includes performance refactoring as standard
  • Faster editorial workflow — custom block patterns and ACF fields that match how your team actually works
  • A theme that’s upgrade-safe — your changes don’t break the next time the theme author releases an update
  • Lower cost than a full rebuild, with most of the benefits of one

Frequently asked questions

Which themes do you customize?

We work with any well-built theme — Kadence, Astra, GeneratePress, Blocksy, Twenty Twenty-Five and other native block themes, plus quality premium themes from established developers. We’re cautious about heavy multi-purpose themes (Avada, Bridge, The7) because the architecture often makes deep customization counterproductive. We’ll evaluate your specific theme during the initial audit.

Will my customizations survive theme updates?

Yes — that’s the entire point of using a child theme properly. All customization goes into the child theme, so when the parent theme updates, your work isn’t overwritten. Where we add functionality through a custom plugin instead of theme code, that’s also update-safe by design.

Can you customize a theme that uses Elementor or another page builder?

Yes, but with caveats. We can customize the design, add custom widgets, and improve performance, but page builders limit how much we can reduce page weight or restructure templates. If performance is a primary goal, moving away from a page builder is usually the right call — and that becomes a development project, not a customization.

How is customization different from full WordPress development?

Customization works within an existing theme — modifying, extending, refining. Full development builds the theme from scratch around your specific needs. Customization is typically faster and lower cost; development gives you complete control and the best possible performance and structure. We’ll recommend the right path during the initial conversation.

Do you customize WooCommerce too?

Yes. Product page layouts, cart and checkout adjustments, mini-cart customization, custom WooCommerce block patterns, and product filter improvements are common parts of a customization engagement. For deeper WooCommerce work — custom payment flows, complex product configurators, subscription logic — see our custom WordPress development service.

How much does WordPress theme customization cost?

A focused customization typically falls in the lower-to-mid four-figure USD range. Larger engagements with substantial design and performance work scale from there. We send a fixed-fee quote after a short audit — usually within two working days of receiving your brief.
